Youth Cricket
Information
The Youth Section was formed 32 years ago in 1978 and since then we have had over 2,000 children play cricket at the club. We have qualified coaches who are also first-aid trained; a welfare officer and all the equipment you’ll need. We aim to be inclusive, involving youth members in playing organised cricket in addition to the weekly training.
Youth registration evening is at Charlbury Cricket Club from 6.00pm on Friday 23rd April.
(The membership fee this year is £35.00 for all of the children in your family.)
Note: As usual, we have had a large number of applications for places in our youth section and some age groups are now at their capacity. Please note that we cannot accept anymore members in the following groups: Under-7, Under-9 and Under-11.
Registration evening is a chance for players to meet their coaches and weather permitting we will run some simple games. For parents new to the area, it is a chance to make some friends.
Training lasts all summer, continuing through the holidays to the end of August; the only thing that stops us is the weather. In addition to the organised league and cup games, we aim to repeat last year’s experiment and hold a friendly game for club members every free Sunday. It’s a chance for the youth players to get in some extra games, whilst mums and dads can sit on the boundary and enjoy the game whilst browsing the Sunday papers and enjoying a cup of tea or coffee.
We take children from 3-17 and split them up into different groups.
The youngest group is for 3-5 year olds; we call them the 'Tots' and their training is on Saturday mornings at the Cricket Club. It is aimed at introducing younger children to sport and making friends. The tots is split into small groups, with the emphasis in each group on children having fun. See the Cricket Tots page for further information.
At the age of 6, children move up to the main youth section, who train on Friday evenings from 6.30pm onwards. Children are split up by age, we have groups for Under-9, Under-11 and Under-13; plus a girls group; each is entered in organised leagues and tournaments.
(Note that for the Under-9 group we only use plastic ‘Kwik Cricket’ equipment and lightweight windballs. Wooden bats are not permitted in training or games at this age.)
The club has loads of equipment which the children are welcome to use; so if your child is new to the sport there is no need to go to a great deal of expense. All you will need is to ensure that your children wear something practical which you do not mind getting a little grubby.
Children aged 13 and over form part of our ‘Development Squad’ who train on Fridays under the supervision of the Club Coach. This development squad aims at introducing players into adult cricket – either the men’s teams or our Ladies’ team - ensuring that developing players take part at a level suitable for them. Those who play league cricket are also invited to train with the men on Wednesday evenings or Ladies on Thursdays. We are really pleased that girls now have a means of carrying on their sport by taking part in the developing ladies team.
It is the club's intention to make the transition from beginning as a tot, to youth and then adult cricket as seamless as possible in a friendly community club, with additional support given for youngsters who display a particular aptitude for the sport.
Charlbury Youth Cricket has its own management committee which looks after the whole section and the club has gained 'Clubmark' signifying that it meets rigorous safety standards. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact the Welfare Officer Geoff Lowe.
