Youth Section 2017

The Youth Section was formed in 1978 and since then we have had well over 2,000 children play cricket at the club. We have ECB qualified coaches who are also first-aid trained; a welfare officer and all the equipment you’ll need. We aim to be inclusive, involving youth members in playing organised cricket in addition to the weekly training.

youth-section-1Youth Section Youth registration evening is held at the Charlbury Cricket Club pavilion, normally towards the end of April, and the date for this year is Friday 21st April .

The membership fee for 2017 is set at only £45 per child which includes all match fees. We believe this still represents good value for money, with weekly training and coaching from early May through to the end of August. Youth Nights are held on a Friday for the 5+ – 15yr age range from 5.30 – 8.00 pm, which is also a good time for parents to take advantage of the great facilities on offer in our pavilion, namely the bar! Please see the training page to find the times for each age related session.

In the past we have had a large number of applications for places and some age groups have limited capacity, so to ensure a place, do register your child as soon as possible on the Registration night. It is also a chance for players and parents to meet the coaches and weather permitting we will run some simple games.

Training lasts all summer, continuing through the holidays to the end of August; the only thing that stops us is the weather. In addition to the organised league and cup games we have regular Sunday fixtures and also have other friendly fixtures on a Sunday morning when it’s a chance for the youth players to get in some extra games, whilst Mums and Dads can sit on the boundary and enjoy the game whilst browsing the Sunday papers and enjoying a cup of tea or coffee.

We take children and young people from 3-17 and split them up into different groups. The youngest group is for 3-5 year olds; we call them the ‘Cricket Tots’ and their training is now also on Friday evenings at the Cricket Club. It is aimed at introducing younger children to sport and making friends. The Tots are split into small groups, with the emphasis in each group on children having fun.

The club has loads of equipment which the children are welcome to use; so if your child is new to the sport there is no need to go to a great deal of expense. Please note that for the Under-9 age groups and below, we only use plastic Kwik Cricket equipment and lightweight wind balls. Wooden bats are not permitted in training or games at this age. All you will need is to ensure that your children wear something practical which you do not mind getting a little grubby. But for those who like to dress as cricketers, we have no objection to seeing them in their whites!

youth-section-2Youth Section Youngsters aged 14 and over form part of our Development Squad who train on Fridays under the supervision of the Group Coach. This development squad aims at introducing players into adult cricket either the mens teams or our Ladies team – ensuring that developing players take part at a level suitable for them. Those young players (Under 17s) who play league cricket are also invited to train with the adults on Wednesday evenings or Ladies on Thursdays. We are really pleased that girls now have a means of carrying on their sport by taking part in the developing ladies team.

It is the club’s intention to make the transition from beginning as a cricket tot, to youth and then adult cricket as seamless as possible in a friendly community club, with additional support given for youngsters who display a particular aptitude for the sport.

Charlbury Youth Cricket has its own management committee which looks after the whole section and the club has gained ‘Clubmark’ signifying that it meets rigorous safety standards. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact the Youth Chairman, Paul Jenkins or contact the club through our website.
