Charlbury 175-7 (45 overs)

Sam Ratcliffe 30

Andy Glass 35

Dean Warner-Carter 39

Oxford Downs 3rd 177-6 (30 overs)

Charlbury won the toss and elected to bat first. Sam and Simon opened the batting. Sam got off to the better start as he drove a couple of early boundaries. Simon started steadily, just looking to work the ball around for singles. One of the bowlers settled straight into a good line and length and both batsmen found him tough to get away. The other bowler was not allowed to settle by Sam who went on the offensive, pushing a couple of twos to keep things moving. A few extras being bowled as well got Charlbury off to a great start. Then disaster struck as a mix-up in the running saw Simon run out going for a quick single. Andy now came to the crease. A change in the bowling was made from one end as Downs looked to stem the flow of early runs. The change worked as the new bowler quickly settled into a good line and length and now both batsmen were finding runs hard to come by. Sam hit out at one, but hit the ball straight to a fielder and was caught for a good 30. Robert now came to the crease. Both batsmen had to play fairly defensively as the Downs bowlers were bowling well, giving little away. Another change in the bowling was made as the opening bowler left the attack and a new bowler entered it. The new bowler was on the spot from the off and kept the pressure on the batting side. A couple of overs later and other change in the bowling was made as the first change left the attack and a new bowler entered it. The new bowler made a quick impact as he clean bowled Robert. Dean now joined his captain at the wicket. A couple of boundaries were hit to keep the score moving along. Downs were bowling and fielding well and Charlbury were struggling to get the runs away. Slowly the score started to rise as both players pushed a few singles and twos around. dean was looking in good form as he stroked the ball around, whilst also keeping a watchful eye on defending the many good deliveries. Andy was also batting well, looking to score whenever he could. One of the bowlers finished his ten over spell and so one of the opening bowlers returned to the attack. The hundred had been passed and with the overs beginning to run out the batsmen were looking to push on a bit harder. Both batsmen hit another couple of boundaries as they looked to accelerate the scoring. Then disaster struck as just when it looked like Charlbury might be able to push on hard Andy missed one and was bowled for a good 35. Adam now came to the crease. Dean was still looking good, pushing the ball around on both sides of the crease and starting to find runs slightly easier to come by. Another change in the bowling was made as a new bowler entered the attack. The new bowler was straight on the mark from ball one. Dean tried to force on e from the new bowler, but could only hit the ball in the air and was caught. Mark now came to the crease. Charlbury were now looking to score as many as they could from the last few overs. Both batsmen ran hard whenever they could. Downs now brought back the other opening bowler and he made a quick impact. First he bowled Adam and then next ball he had new batsman Alex caught by the wicket-keeper. Miyuru joined Mark at the wicket and they batted out the last couple of overs to take Charlbury to 175-7.

Charlbury would have to bowl well if they were to win the game. Emilia and Miyuru opened the bowling. Miyuru struck  third ball when he clean bowled one batsman. The other opening batsman went on the offensive hitting several early boundaries and forcing a quick change as Miyuru made way for Sam. Emilia was bowling a good line and length and causing problems for one end, but the other opening batsman was finding runs easy to come by no matter who bowled. Sam dropped into a good length and line, but was still punished with a couple of boundaries. Then the new batsman skied the ball and Ellie gratefully took the catch off of Sam’s bowling leaving Downs 41-2. Sam quickly made way for Robert as Charlbury looked to slow the run rate down from one end, but to little avail. Emilia then made way for Ellie. Ellie dropped into a reasonable length and line and this started to slow things down slightly, but Downs had got off to a good start and Charlbury would need to keep taking wickets if they were to win the game. The new batsman then miss-hit the ball and it lobbed up into the air for Robert to take a good caught and bowled, Charlbury were still in the game. Then Charlbury got the wicket they needed as the opening batsman played one shot too many, skied the ball and Robert gratefully took the catch leaving Downs 85-4. Charlbury were now right back in the game as Downs had two new batsmen at the crease. One batsman went on the offensive, keeping up what the opening batsman started and keeping the pressure on the bowlers. Charlbury were going to struggle to defend their total unless they could bowl Downs out. Robert left the attack and Andy entered it, looking for more quick wickets, but when they were not forthcoming he took himself out of the attack and brought on Mark. Mark made a quick impact when he wrapped one batsman on the pads and he was given out adjudged LBW. 129-5, but lots of overs left. Ellie was bowling well, but with no luck as she beat the bat on several occasions. One batsman was still hitting out and he found a couple more fours as Downs closed in on victory. Mark then wrapped the new batsman on the pads and he as given out adjudged LBW. Unfortunately Charlbury could not get another wicket and Downs won the game by 4 wickets.

Charlbury won the toss and elected to field first. Ellie and Alex opened the bowling and got Charlbury off to a reasonable start. Ellie quickly dropped into a great line and length, causing the batsmen problems and making run scoring difficult. Alex too dropped into a great line and length, pressuring the batsmen with his accuracy. A couple of overs later Alex grabbed the first wicket when he clean bowled the captain. The two batsmen now just played a few overs out just to try and get their eye in and make sure no more wickets fell. After ten overs Alex came out of the attack and Nathan entered it. Now the batsmen decided to hit to try and make sure that the new bowler did not have time to settle. Both batsmen played some powerful shots and managed to find a few boundaries as the score started to accelerate. Nathan was quickly pulled from the attack and Abi Flory entered it. Ellie was still bowling well and managing to keep the runs down, but was still hit for a few runs. The new batsman attacked hard hitting several deliveries to the boundary. The score was mounting much quicker than Charlbury wanted, but there seemed little they could do to stem the flow of runs. After twenty overs Ellie finished her great spell of bowling and Andy entered the attack. The batsmen were in full swing now and attacked Andy from the off, but this backfired as Andy clean bowled the number three batsman and Charlbury were back in the game. The opening batsman was still there stroking the ball all around the wicket and Charlbury would need him out if they were to win the game. The new batsman started where the previous one left off by attacking hard. The score was racing along now and no matter what Charlbury tried it did not seem to work. Charlbury were fielding well, making several diving stops. Abi left the attack and Alex re-entered it as Charlbury tried to gain some sort of foothold in the game. Alex again dropped into a good line and length, but with the batsmen already set the runs came quicker than they had earlier off of him. The overs were now beginning to run out and this just made the batsmen go harder at the bowling. Alex his allotted ten over spell and so Abi re-entered the attack. Then Charlbury got a bonus as the opening batsman hit one delivery from Andy in the air and Ellie gratefully took a good catch. The 250 mark had been passed and the runs were still coming too quickly. In his last over Andy grabbed a third wicket when he wrapped the number four batsman on the pads and he was given out adjudged LBW. Charlbury now had two newish batsmen to bowl at as Nathan re-entered the attack in place of Andy. The 300 mark was reached, but just afterwards Nathan grabbed a wicket when one batsman skied the ball and Simon took a great catch. Going into the last couple of the batsmen just threw the bat at everything and ran hard. In the last over Abi grabbed her first wicket when one batsman edged the ball and wicket-keeper Adam took the catch. East Oxford eventually finished on a huge 332-5.

Charlbury would have to bat well if they were to come even close to their target. Mark and Simon opened the batting. The East Oxford bowlers quickly settled into a great line and length and Charlbury found run scoring much more difficult than in the first innings. Simon started off slowly, but managed to find a few early singles. Mark too started slowly, but found an early four. Then disaster struck as Mark missed one and was bowled. Martyn now entered the fray, but was not there too long as he too was bowled. The captain, Andy, now joined Simon at the wicket. Both batsmen now tried to use up a few overs so that Charlbury did not lose any more quick wickets. A change in the bowling was then made as a new bowler entered the attack. The new bowler bowled a good length, but was slightly wayward in his line and started to bowl the odd wide which helped to increase the score. Charlbury were still scoring slowly and would need to push on hard if they were to win the game. Simon was batting well, keeping out the many good deliveries, whilst pushing a few singles and twos around. Andy was wrapped on the pads by the new bowler and given out adjudged LBW to leave Charlbury four wickets down. Jon Flory now entered the fray. Another change in the bowling was now made as the opening bowler left the attack and a new one entered it. The new bowler was looser than the previous ones and started to bowl a few wides which helped the Charlbury score along. Both batsmen drilled deliveries thru the off side and for four to keep things moving. Then disaster struck. Just as it looked like Charlbury had seen off the bowlers Simon edged one and was caught for a good 30. Rob now entered the fray and started in a fairly defensive way. Both batsmen were trying to see the bowlers off and then see what else East Oxford had to offer. Jon hit out at one delivery and was caught leaving Charlbury five wickets down. Alex now came to the crease and was quickly off the mark with a single. Soon afterwards Rob missed one and was bowled meaning Nathan had to come to the crease. The overs were by now staring to run out and a change in the bowling was made as one of the opening bowlers returned to the attack. Charlbury were by now too far behind the rate to win the game and now it was about pride in their performance. Both youngsters batted sensibly, pushing a few quick singles around to keep the scoreboard moving. Alex was looking good as he stroked the ball around on both sides of the wicket. Nathan too was looking comfortable at the crease, pushing the ball around for runs, but also looking solid in defence. The game seemed to be ebbing to a close, but then Alex missed one and was bowled meaning Abi had to come to the wicket for the last few overs. East Oxford now began changing their bowling around as they search for the last few wickets, this played into Charlbury’s hands as both players stroked the ball, around and ran hard for every run. Abi got some revenge for being hit around when she smashed two deliveries to the boundary for four. Nathan also got some revenge as he pushed the ball around and also found the boundary. Eventually Charlbury finished on a creditable 181-7.

Sat 11th May Charlbury 2nd vs Minster Lovell 2nd

Charlbury 2nd 157-7 (45 overs)

Simon Smith 46

Minster Lovell 2nd 101 (37 overs)

Emilia Bartram 5-22

Minster Lovell won the toss and elected to field first. Richard and Simon opened the batting for Charlbury and got them off to a good start. The opening bowlers for Minster dropped into a great line and length from the off and made run scoring difficult, as both batsmen struggled at the start. Simon got the first boundary of the innings when he played one shot thru the off-side. Both batsmen early on were content to just push a few singles whilst making sure they did not get out. Richard was playing in his usual style, keeping out the many good deliveries whilst also looking for the quick single. Simon too was playing well and having to play defensively against some good bowling. Eventually Minster took off both opening bowlers and brought on two new ones, who also settled quickly into good lines. Richard then hit a boundary four to get the score moving along. Charlbury seemed to have weathered the early bowling and it seemed to be getting slightly easier to bat on, but then Richard missed one and was bowled for a good 24. Barry now strode to the crease and was quickly on his way with a boundary four. Another change in the bowling was then made as the first change bowler made way for a new bowler. Barry decided to try and take the new bowler on, but missed one and was bowled meaning the captain, Andy now joined Simon at the wicket. Simon was batting well, stroking the ball around and finding the odd boundary to keep the scoreboard ticking over. Slowly the runs came and with a few extras as well the score started to rise. Then Andy decided to try and hit out at one of the bowlers, he took a step down the wicket, missed the ball and was bowled. Hasula now came to the crease, but was not there long as he got caught leaving Charlbury 96-4. Rob now entered the fray. Simon played a delivery thru the leg-side for four as he neared his fifty. Then just after Charlbury reached the hundred mark Simon hit one in the air and was caught for a great 46. Mark then joined Rob at the crease. The overs were now running out and so Charlbury would have to push on hard if they were to set a defendable total. Both batsmen ran hard for every run. Rob hit a couple of  boundary fours to get things moving. Minster now started to change their bowling around as they sought to keep the Charlbury score down. Mark then launched one out of the ground for six and then followed it up with a boundary four. The score started to race along as both players looked for the quick single. With only a couple of overs left Mark was run out after going for a quick single. Miyuru now came to the crease, but was bowled trying to play a big shot. Abi came in for the last few balls as Rob finished with a good 28 not out and Charlbury ended on 157-7.

Charlbury would have to bowl well if they were to defend their total. Ellie and Emilia opened the bowling and got Charlbury off to a great start. In only her second over Emilia found an edge and Mark did the rest taking a good low catch. Then a couple of deliveries later She again found the edge and wicket-keeper Abi did the rest as the new batsman was caught. Minster 8-2 early on and this gave Charlbury the chance to squeeze the game. Ellie had dropped into a good line and length and was getting some movement off of the pitch. Emilia too was bowling well, getting the ball to nip around whilst also using her pace to give all the batsmen some problems. The two Minster batsmen now took a few overs to just get themselves into the game and to make sure no more early wickets fell. Slowly Minster started to get back into it and the batsmen hit a couple of boundaries to keep the score ticking over. The opening batsman was looking solid at the crease and was playing some good shots, Charlbury were going to need to get him out quickly if they were to win. Then Charlbury had a big over as first Emilia clean bowled the opening batsman, then last ball of the over she clean bowled the other set batsman and Minster were four wickets down. Things got even better for Charlbury in the next over as Ellie then got amongst the wickets as one batsman hit out at her, but hit the ball straight to Rob who gratefully took the catch. In the next over Emilia grabbed her fifth wicket of the game as Miyuru took a great catch, leaving Minster 40-6 and in trouble. A couple of overs later both girls finished their magnificent spells and so Andy and Hasula entered the fray. Both new bowlers quickly dropped into a great line and length to keep all the pressure on the batting side. The required rate was going up as the batsmen struggled to hit more than the odd single or two off of an over. Charlbury were fielding really well, diving all over the place, stopping many shots going for any runs at all. A couple of boundaries were hit, but then Hasula got a wicket when one batsman skied the ball and Simon took a good catch. The overs were by now beginning to run out and Minster were going to have to go some if they were to win the game. Andy grabbed the eighth wicket when the batsman tried to smash him for six, but could only find Barry on the boundary and his big hands smothered the ball for a good catch. In his next over Andy bowled one batsman leaving Minster nine wickets down. The game did not go on much longer as soon afterwards a mix up in the running saw Emilia swoop on the ball, throw it in quickly and the run out was made leaving Minster 101 all out.

A great win for the seconds built on some good innings from Simon, Rob and Mark and then the exceptional bowling of both Emilia and Ellie destroyed the Minster top order – well played lads and ladies.
